Monster Adapter 魔环 LA-FE2 FAQ

On November 11, 2023, Monster Adapter 魔环 announced its development plan for 「LA-FE2」.

As an extension of the previous 「LA-FE1」 product, support for Nikon (Nikkor) AF lenses without built-in motors.
Using the motor included in this adapter, torque can be output for these lenses to drive autofocus.


This article is used to collect frequently asked questions, for the convenience of the user.

▲Difference with LA-FE1

[Question] How does the LA-FE2 compare to the previous LA-FE1?

The LA-FE2 can be seen as a complete upgrade to the LA-FE1, supporting NIKKOR AF lenses without focus motors, or third-party F-mount lenses that fall into this category.

Externally, because the adapter ring has two built-in motors for focus and aperture, it is partially raised and may not fit because of physical interference with some products.

Already known such as Nikon's Pronea series of lens products developed for APS film, etc.,
were found by K.I.M tests.



Functionality covers the group of lenses supported by the LA-FE1 in addition to the F-mount AF type lenses without motors.

[Question] LA-FE2 when using a Nikon AF-S lens (or G-type lens) with a built-in focus motor.
Is there a difference in focusing speed compared to the LA-FE1?

When driving a lens with a built-in focus motor, the FE2 uses the same microcode as this part of the FE1;
As long as the body and lens are identical, their focusing performance should be the same.

[Question] Is there recommended cameras for the LA-FE2?

Due to the iterative nature of Sony's focusing algorithms, three generations and newer are recommended, which is roughly the bodies introduced in 2017 and after.
This type of body will have features such as eye focus on it, all of which can technically benefit the adapter lens.

[Question] Is it possible to push a type of lens such as the 80-200mm F2.8, which seems to have a heavier focus lens?

Although the LA-FE2 motor looks small in size, it should have no problem pushing the AF 80-200/2.8.

◇100%画面不够清晰

[Question] The shot was taken and found to be not sharp enough and not in solid focus.

Most likely because these lenses were manufactured in an earlier period and were not designed for high resolution digital sensors.
This occurs on the 61MP A7R5 model (lens is AF 85mm F1.4 D),
found by Asobinet in testing.



This is most likely not an isolated case, i.e. the lens design resolution is lower than today's top sensor resolution;
You can consider downsizing in post-production, or choosing models such as 24MP or 33MP.

◇Adapter by adapter, to the Z-mount

[Question] Is it possible to set up the LA-FE2 as a Z-mount application with the associated adapter ring for E-Z?

The Z mount has two of the manufacturer's more unusual adapter rings:
  • 天工 Techart「TZE-01」「TZE-02」
  • 迦百列 Megadap「ETZ11」「ETZ21」「ETZ21 Pro」
both of which use E-mount lenses adapted to the Z-mount.
So as soon as the LA-FE2 appeared, there were cries of speculation.

However, it is known from inquiries that Monster Adapter has not reached an agreement with any of them at this time.

But judging from personal experience there is an 80% chance that it won't work and a 10% chance that it will result in a burnout;

Incidentally, currently trying to use an AF D-mount lens with autofocus on a Nikon Z mount body,
the practiced solution is to use the TZM, with the F-M adapter, to achieve focus by moving the lens as a whole.

About Nikon AF Lenses


Nikon made an attempt at AF on a DSLR in 1983, with the model F3 AF, and accompanying lenses:
  • Nikkor AI AF 80mm F2.8 S
  • Nikkor AI AF ED 200mm F3.5 S
The attempt with a built-in focus motor went into mass production but did not roll out.

Time came in 1986, after Minolta introduced its Minolta AF system, Nikon introduced new AF lenses based on the physical foundation of the F-mount.

These lenses utilize a body-mounted focusing motor with a screw-drive mechanism at the interface of the mounting bayonet;
The auto iris mechanism is selected on the lens by mechanical action transmitted through the body bayonet, as is the case with the auto iris mechanism.

The wave of production of these lenses continued into the 2000-2010 generation, after which they coexisted with AF-S/AF-P lenses with built-in motors.

Third-party manufacturers at this time, because they had to produce Canon EF-compatible lenses, the technology of the built-in focusing motor advanced, and gradually lenses without a focusing module became rare.
